Coming in March

Sunday, March 7 (10:45)
Rev. Terry Ellen: "Copenhagen and the Meaning of Life"

Yes, they're connected. UU minister Robert Fulghum discovered the meaning of life once in Cyprus. And the meaning of Copenhagen -- no, not Danny Kaye's Hans Christian Anderson's - was evident for us all to see not long ago. Our souls and our future are indeed intertwined.

Sunday, March 14 (10:45)
Carmen Jackson: "Diversity: Then and Now"

Carmen Jackson will be with us again for a continuation of her talk on January 17th. She will share some comparisons about race relations from the civil rights movement to the present. We will look at the progress in education and jobs and the economic progress of minorities. She will also share some music demonstrating how African-Americans communicate through music.
Carmen B. Jackson graduated from Illinois State University with a BS degree in Comprehensive Social Science in Secondary Education, and MS in Guidance Counseling in Higher Education. She is the former Director of Residence Life; Assistant to the Vice President of Student and Educational Services; and Director of the Diversity Center, at Frostburg State University. She retired from FSU after 29 years of service. Carmen is a longstanding member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and has been serving as the Allegany/Garrett Counties Chairperson of Citizen Review Boards for the past 20 plus years.

Sunday, March 21 (10:45)
Rev. Rebekah Montgomery: "Embracing Being a Heretic for Love"

Drawing on our rich and proud history as Unitarian Universalists, Rev. Montgomery will explore how our roots inform our modern day UU campaign of "Standing on the Side of Love".
The Rev. Rebekah Ann Montgomery is a Unitarian Universalist community minister. Rev. Montgomery began attending River Road Unitarian Universalist Church as a small child with her family. Rev. Montgomery has a BA in Religious Studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, a Masters of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in NYC, NY and a Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Nova SE University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Currently, Rev. Montgomery is on Active Duty for the National Guard and serves at the Army National Guard Bureau. She is also a brigade chaplain in the Maryland National Guard and serves the 58th Troop Command in Adelphi, MD. She was deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan in July of 2005 for an 18 month tour of duty. Rev. Montgomery lives in Bethesda with her husband, CPT Travis Montgomery, a Civil affairs officer in the US Army Reserves, and their two children.

Sunday, March 28 (10:45)
Rev. John Gaffney: "A Sunday Worship Service Without Belief?"

Why do we attend a Sunday worship service, we of little faith, when we could spend our time better in nature or reading a good book?
Rev. John Gaffney was a Roman Catholic priest, a Franciscan missionary to Bolivia and Chile, New York City social worker, cab driver, teacher, salesman and finally a UU minister. He served as UUFGC's minister from 1992 to 1994.

Green Sanctuary News

.

.

With dedicated volunteer efforts, the Green Sanctuary Committee of the UUFGC is developing a Community Rain Garden Project to raise public awareness and invite participation in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers by addressing water quality in Cumberland, Maryland. The functional and educational rain garden, located on the southern side of the UUFGC sanctuary, will capture storm water runoff from the roof top of the sanctuary, demonstrating to residents of this low-income, urban neighborhood how modifying land uses can positively affect the health of the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. By reducing the amount of storm water that flows directly into city sewers during periods of heavy rain, land owners can see how to mitigate against Cumberland's release of highly polluting combined storm water runoff and sewage into the Potomac.

The Community Rain Garden Project is being funded through a mini grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Since the first groundbreaking on September 10, seventeen cubic yards of fill has been removed from the location and replaced with twelve cubic yards of suitable substrate. Interpretive sign design and a planting plan are being prepared and the project is expected to be completed by October 11, for a dedication ceremony at the Fellowship that will be attended by Cumberland Mayor Lee N. Fiedler. Mayor Fiedler will discuss how this
Community Project fits well with the City of Cumberland's goal to improve water quality.
